Sustainable Housing project in Fremantle

A new housing project being undertaken in Knutsford, Fremantle, is combining the use of renewable energy, 21st century water use, sustainable building and sustainable landscape design.

All the buildings will be fitted with solar panels which charge a shared battery used by all the residents, reducing or even eliminating reliance on the electricity grid. Electric vehicle chargers will also be provided. You can see a video explaining the system at the Smart Energy Council website.

Passive solar design features will be incorporated into the residences and landscaping will encourage local native flora and fauna. Landscaping will also manage stormwater run-off which will be captured in tanks and plumbed into the homes to be used in washing machines and toilets.
