A South Australian Company, CCT Energy Storage has recently launched a new way to store energy, the thermal battery. The battery, known as a Thermal Energy Device (or TED) can store electrical energy as thermal energy by heating and melting a unique phase change material. The company says that the energy is stored at more than 12 times the density of a lead-acid battery. They will supply at least 10 of the units to commercial customers this year
Other advantages of the technology include its scalability and also its ability to be charged and discharged at the same time.
